Brazil is known for its lush rainforests, colourful carnivals and a diverse culture. But just as you can find unique animals in its jungles, so you can also find unique handicraft and art in its markets.
Fortaleza is an excellent place to buy handicraft. Here, very talented artists produce various kinds of handicraft and sell them for cheap prices. You can even see live sculpturing etc. taking place, with finished items for purchase. The two best places to buy handicraft pieces in Fortaleza are the Central Handicraft Market near downtown and this Fair, known as Feirinha de Artesanato, Feirinha da Beira-Mar or Feirinha do Náutico, located by the sea in the Meireles beach.
Here, hundreds of stalls are assembled in corridors, and start opening around 4pm. When open, they offer a large variety of products including regional food (cashew and cachaça) and hammocks. You will find items that interest and intrigue you, useful items and Brazilian artwork from local talent. The area around the fair is one of the busiest parts of Fortaleza, surrounded by several hotels and restaurants. So if you need a bite to eat, or want to stay in the area, you have plenty of choices.
If you find yourself in Brazil, a visit to the local craft market or fair is a must. You are sure to find items you will fall in love with. But remember, no price is final. Try to be fair in dealing with the vendors, but if you need to get something a little cheaper, use your skills of negotiation!
